If you are developing applications inside of Microsoft Office or developing applications that work with Microsoft Office, then you've got to go to the upcoming Office Developer Conference in San Jose next month. I've been asked to demonstrate and talk...( Read More...

Virtual Earth has just been updated to Version 6 with a much cooler user interface. I downloaded the latest JavaScript from http://dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6,
updated the script file in the workspace, and this is what I got:
If you have added the Geo-Collaboration tool to your workspace and you want to to use Virtual Earth 6:
- Edit each of the forms:
- Add the script http://dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6, to the form scripts list (it will take a moment to download)
- Save the form
- Save the workspace sandbox.
This solution demonstration has taken on a life of its own and from what I've been told, it has been shown to some pretty interesting organizations. Here's what it can do:
- Secure geo-collaboration
- It is part of a Groove peer-to-peer workspace which includes other tools like discussions, files, chat, and other tools
- Easily configurable and adaptable to solution needs
Here is an invite to the workspace if you want to see it in action:

One of the synergies that generated the most interest was one where I demonstrated Virtual Earth running inside of Groove. Because of this interest, I have updated the demonstration to be able to track not only pushpins, but paths and regions as well. Tomorrow (September 7, 2007) at 11:00 AM Pacific Time (GMT-8), I will be showing this demo in a LiveMeeting and explaining how easy it is to adapt to various collaboration scenarios. Here are some ideas that came up in the Groove Workspace that is hosting the demo:
- Disaster Response (the recent fires in Greece)
- Tracking Alumni
- Service Industry Calls
- Bird Flu Response Teams
Please send me a message if you want to:
- Participate in the LiveMeeting Tomorrow
- Be invited to Groove Workspace where this demo is running

I have recorded a screencast with Camtasia Studio that shows how I embedded a Virtual Earth control into a Groove Workspace. If you want to see this in action, send me a message and I will invite you to the workspace. I will make another post shortly on my workflow on getting the Camtasia screencast into a Silverlight Streaming application with picture-in-picture.

Following up on my post about putting Virtual Earth in a Groove space, I was able to save and load lists of pushpins that are in the Groove Space as well. I have written some simple XML serialization of a Virtual Earth Shape Layer into a hidden data field in a Groove workspace. Send me a message and I'll invite you to the space.

A few months ago, I create a Microsoft Office Groove 2007 to share the source code for my SilverlightMap project: code to transform a Mindjet MindManager Map into a Silverlight Streaming Application hosted on silverlight.live.com. For those of you who don't know Groove is Microsoft's Peer-to-Peer workspace solution. I find it very useful for putting together ad-hoc workgroups or working with my distributed team, since I am in the field (work at home and travel).
Last month, Hugh Pyle, posted Silverlight in Groove about how to put the Silverlight control inside of a Groove Form. It was obvious to me what I needed to try next: put the Silverlight Map control in a Silverlight form to share maps via a Groove Workspace. Following Hugh's guidelines, I was able to get a Silverlight control in a Groove form. It was clear to me that I could modify the uploader that I built to use a Groove Web Services to insert the Map's XAML into a Groove record. What wasn't clear was where I would put the images, video, and audio that were part of the MindManager Map so that they would be visible in the Silverlight Map and part of the Groove Space. If anyone has suggestions, I would love to hear them. If you want an invite to the Groove Workspace for the SilverlightMap project, please send me a message.

I have just setup a Groove Workspace for the Silverlight Map demo that I have been working on. If you want to participate and help grow the demo, please send me a message and I'll invite you to the space.
