My first experience with SharePoint was at my previous company a few years ago and if you saw SharePoint back then you would have been as underwhelmed as I was (performance sucked). When I first saw MOSS 2007 last year (before I joined Microsoft) I was blown away. It looks like the team dealt with the performance issues and added so much more.
