My First Popfly Mashup: Earthquakes!
30 October 07 10:12 PM | Synergist | 0 Comments

I just sat through an earthquake; a bit shaking but nothing damaged; no one was hurt.  That gave me an idea: why don't I show earthquakes on a Virtual Earth Map using Popfly, Microsoft's new mashup service?

  1. Get Geo-RSS Data from the USGS
  2. Convert the RSS Items to Virtual Earth Pushpins

Here are the Magnitude 5+ earthquakes for the past 7 days:

If you are on popfly, come over to my page at http://www.popfly.ms/users/MS-Synergist.  If you're not, it's free to join and start mashing up with a design tool created in Silverlight!

Updated Groove Workspace with Virtual Earth 6
17 October 07 04:25 PM | Synergist | 0 Comments

Virtual Earth has just been updated to Version 6 with a much cooler user interface.  I downloaded the latest JavaScript from http://dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6,

updated the script file in the workspace, and this is what I got:  Virtual Earth in Groove
If you have added the Geo-Collaboration tool to your workspace and you want to to use Virtual Earth 6:

  1. Edit each of the forms:
  2. Add the script http://dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6,  to the form scripts list (it will take a moment to download)
  3. Save the form
  4. Save the workspace sandbox.

This solution demonstration has taken on a life of its own and from what I've been told, it has been shown to some pretty interesting organizations. Here's what it can do:

  • Secure geo-collaboration
  • It is part of a Groove peer-to-peer workspace which includes other tools like discussions, files, chat, and other tools
  • Easily configurable and adaptable to solution needs

Here is an invite to the workspace if you want to see it in action:

Upcoming Webinar on Virtual Earth in Groove
06 September 07 02:25 PM | Synergist | 0 Comments

One of the synergies that generated the most interest was one where I demonstrated Virtual Earth running inside of Groove.   Because of this interest, I have updated the demonstration to be able to track not only pushpins, but paths and regions as well.  Tomorrow (September 7, 2007) at 11:00 AM Pacific Time (GMT-8), I will be showing this demo in a LiveMeeting and explaining how easy it is to adapt to various collaboration scenarios.  Here are some ideas that came up in the Groove Workspace that is hosting the demo:

  • Disaster Response (the recent fires in Greece)
  • Tracking Alumni
  • Service Industry Calls
  • Bird Flu Response Teams

Please send me a message if you want to:

  • Participate in the LiveMeeting Tomorrow
  • Be invited to Groove Workspace where this demo is running

Groove and Virtual Earth Screencast using Silverlight
30 July 07 10:49 AM | Synergist | 0 Comments

I have recorded a screencast with Camtasia Studio that shows how I embedded a Virtual Earth control into a Groove Workspace.  If you want to see this in action, send me a message and I will invite you to the workspace.  I will make another post shortly on my workflow on getting the Camtasia screencast into a Silverlight Streaming application with picture-in-picture.

Storing Virtual Earth Pushpins in a Groove Space
17 July 07 03:26 PM | Synergist | 0 Comments

Following up on my post about putting Virtual Earth in a Groove space, I was able to save and load lists of pushpins that are in the Groove Space as well.  I have written some simple XML serialization of a Virtual Earth Shape Layer into a hidden data field in a Groove workspace.  Send me a message and I'll invite you to the space.
