Information Developer Information

This solution contains the source code to demonstrate how to add task panes to MindManager and how to handle MindManager document events.

Usage

  • Start MindManager Pro 7
  • Open an existing map or Create a new map.
  • Open the Map ExplorerTask Pane by clicking on the tab on the right of the window. If the Task Panes are not visible, then open the Map Explorer Pane by clicking the Task Panes button on the bottom-right of the MindManager (also shown in the image below)

  • As the topics are created on the map,Map Explorer will automatically keep populating the topics in the Map Explorer Pane.Selecting nodes in the map explorer will select and snap the corresponding topics into view in the map view.
  • Nodes in the map explorer can be dragged and dropped within the map explorer to rearrange topics, callouts, and floating topics.
  • In Map Explorere pane: Right click on a topic to Insert Topic, Child Topics, Callouts or can even delete a topic. (See image below)

Stop User Warning

Some users of the version have reported problems causing MindManager to crash when running the Map Explorer with Gyronix ResultsManager.  If you are using ResultsManager, please do not install the Map Explorer.  Mindjet and Gyronix are working together to diagnose and solve the problem.

This is seems like a very useful tool; thanks for sharing! However, right before installation completes, I receive the following fatal error: "Unable to get installer types in the C:\Program Files\Mindjet\Mindjet MindManager 7 Map Explorer\MapExplorer.dll assembly. --> Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information." Kindly advise on how to resolve this. Thank you.

I have the same problem as Loai50. I tried to install both the exe and msi file and they produce the same error message. It's a shame as I believe this program could be really useful as I have big maps that is starting to become hard to navigate in. If there is anything I can do to help you resolve this issue, feel free to contact me. / John

I'm trying to install on Vista 64 Ultimate but I'm having a different error message on install. The installer seems to get near completion then gives me this: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2869." I'm trying to install in MindManager Pro 7. This looks like a really useful addin.

Thank you everyone for your input. I was finally able to get to the root and resolve the issue. I have uploaded another version (1.0.11) of this installer. This should fix the problem. I am not sure if it is going to work on 64 bit vista as I have not tested it on 64 bit. regards, vivek

This is a very useful tool and enhancement to work with MM, but unfortunately it slow down performance if you work in multi-map-mode with comprehensive maps. It seems that every time you jump from one open map to another open map, that the map explorer view will be refreshed completely even though nothing has changed. I am using a map which is totally 2 MB and it takes up to 60sec to switch to view this map again. So the map explorer should not refreshed when I switch from on map to the next map in mulit-map-mode.

I have the same experience as Peter: With large maps the performance heavily decreases. And MM gets unstable and crashes more often. It even crashes (reproducible!) when I turn off the add-in in MM7 when I don't need it. The tool is wonderful (and used in a competitors mind map application since years...) but not in a final mode so far. It crashes as well when you work with ResultsManager. This is known for a long time now (already in MM6) but no bug fixing was done. Please, Please, Please: Put some work into that extremely useful add-in, make it stable and applicable for use in a professional environment and make it a standard functionality within the next MM version. That would be a new function! Not a ribbon bar.. ;-)). Best regards Stefan

Maybe I am missing something here.... What is the benefit of this map-epxlorer over the Outline view??

DONT USE IT. I used it with MM7 and for a simple 100k map, MM became unsuable. It blowed up memory to more than a 1GB or ram. I think it appens especially when used in conjunction with automated file explorer map part. I wasted a lot of time! Things are back to normal since I removed it.

A very valuable add-on to MindManager. Thank you for the effort you put into this. I cannot confirm the performance problem. Map Explorer works for me even on very large maps. The installation problem with error code 2869 is a known issue with .msis under Vista. Simply install from the supplied .exe file and it should work (one other package here--think it was Research Accelerator--has a wrong link in the .exe; simply rename the .msi accordingly and install). An issue I am seeing with Map Explorer is that all the item titles are crossed out in the explorer view. I am using it on Vista with MM 7.0.429 and RM installed (against the advice above to not do that as I am not experiencing any crashes).

Oopps... that had a quick fix. For some odd reason, the font in the Map Explorer settings happened to be set to crossed out. Should have checked that first. Sorry.

Neat stuff. I am trialing MM7 and built up a moderate size 100 node map. Since I was doing lots of brainstorming, I had a lot of floating topics. Map Explorer showed me the floating topics as well as topics in main branches whereas I just found out Outline mode doesn't show the floating topics at all. I really like how MindManager Outline mode lets the add/edit subtopics right from outline mode. Sometimes some branches ore easier to review and work with in a condensed text format. So in this usage mode, I found myself repeatedly crashing MM7 by goin toOutline mode and then using Map Explorer to navigate to floating topic trees while automatically showing branch alone. Needless to say, not fun to lose unsaved work that way... ************** Exception Text ************** System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException: External component has thrown an exception. at Mindjet.MindManager.Interop.IDocument.set_VisibleCentralTopic(Topic ppTopic) at MapExplorer.MindManagerTreeView.Filter(Topic topic) at MapExplorer.MindManagerTreeView.AfterSelect(Object sender, TreeViewEventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.TreeView.OnAfterSelect(TreeViewEventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.TreeView.TvnSelected(NMTREEVIEW* nmtv) at System.Windows.Forms.TreeView.WmNotify(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.TreeView.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.OnMessage(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam) That said, as long as I stay out of outline mode, it sure was nice to be able to click around in the explorer and have the map automatically show the branch alone. Sure beats constantly hunting down the show branch alone button on the ribbon or the quick access toolbar...

This is a valuable feature. I have been looking for it for many years, and I've looked at every outliner and mind mapper I could find since Think Tank days. Concept Mindmap has a capability to see the outline view and map view together, but their product in not nearly as robust as MindManager. In Concept Mindmap you have the option to show outline view, map view, or both together. I'd like to see MindManager go that way. There are times when you "Can't see the forest for all the trees" without this feature. There is just too much white space in the map view. And even the current outline view is too spread out. The explorer view gives you a nice tight view of the overall map. To go further, it would be even greater if you could create outlines quickly with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts. ECCO is the role model for this in my opinion.

Sometimes the explorer gets screwed up and looses information that is on the map. I found a workaround for this problem is to open a second map, then just switch back and forth between maps to refresh the Explorer.
