1.0.52: Add search and research to project planning, brainstorming, and business processes within MindManager Pro 6.  This adds a task pane similar to the Research task pane in Microsoft Office 2003 so MindManager can pull in search results from desktop services such as Microsoft Windows Desktop Search and Google Desktop and online services like MSN, Yahoo, Google, Technorati, and Flickr.

CheckVersion 1.0.52 (2/5/2007)

  • Windows Desktop Search 3.0 will not work with the Research Accelerator.  The Research Accelerator was built to use the API for Windows Desktop Search 2.6 and there is no published API for Windows Desktop Search yet.  Microsoft is planning on releasing an API in late February 2007 (see here).
  • Google is no longer issuing API keys for its search API (see here).  If you need a key, please contact us.

I just updated this add-in to work with Office 2007. If you have Office 2007 installed, the research services are installed to a different registry section than with Office 2003.

I like this but I was wondering how to get the Thesuarus to show up. The Encarta Encyclopedia has a Thesaurus but what about the one that shows up in Office?

Michael S. Scherotter said:

The thesaurus is an internal Microsoft Office service and is only available in the Microsoft Office applications. The Encarta dictionary is a web service and is accessible via the Research Accelerator.

This might be better in a forum (let me know which one is appropriate) but I cannot paste into the Research 'Search For' field. Ctrl-V create a new floating topic in the current Map.

Michael S. Scherotter said:

This is the right forum for that. The pasting issue is a known problem. You have two other options: If the text that you want to search for is in a topic, right click on the topic and select Research {text}... You can use the context menu in the Search for box and select Paste.

I really like the Research Accelerator, I find myself linking in business information for presentations and reviews. I also have used it to pull information from craigslist, which brings me to my question. If I use the craigslist research accelerator I only see a limited list of craigslist sites and I want to get local information from minneapolis.craigslist.org but I don't see anyway to modify the dropdown list that appears to add minneapolis to the list.

Michael S. Scherotter said:

First person to ask for that. You would need to modify this file on your system: C:\Program Files\Mindjet\Research Accelerator\CraigsList.xslt What this file does is to create a query for CraigsList search system which returns a result set in in RSS. The transform converts the RSS into the Research Service XML. Search for the text "Chicago" and you will see how to add another location. look at the URL from CraigsList search to see the areaId that they assign to Minneapolis.

Please update installer of this add-in. It refuses to install saying that I should have MM6Pro build 643, while I have #664. All the requirements are met. Just can't get around of that one :(

Installation went smooth but can't get the google Web Search to work. Frist got the "Exception from service object: Invalid authorization key: Enter a Google API Key from the Research options at the bottom of this task pane. Get A Google API Key." message. After entering my Google Base API in the 'Reasearch options' window now I get the "Exception from service object: Invalid authorization key: myKey Enter a Google API Key from the Research options at the bottom of this task pane. Get A Google API Key." where myKey is the key I got from Google. What should I do next?

Google is no longer issuing keys for the Google SOAP API. Your Google base API key will not work here. See this: http://code.google.com/apis/soapsearch/

I see; does it mean new users will not be able to use this service? Can you package and distrubute your add-in with a known working API key? This is a really valuable add-in and I just like to see it much more powerfull with the Google Web Search serive. Thanks.

I have Mindmanager Pro 6 and just installed this service. The problem I have is that the research pane in Mindmanager does not return any results. The message in the window pane is: " Windows Desktop search ()not searched) The service is down." The Windows Desktop search is running and I can perform searched normally in the Windows Search program. I am running Windows XP Home, Office 2007 and all the programs have the latest updates installed. Can you help? Graham...

I have the same problem as Graham. Research works in word. The desktop search works outside of mindmanager, but there are no results returned in mindmanager. Michael, I sent you an email with screenshots. I am running office 2007 and the latest version of the microsoft desktop search tool. I just installed mindmanager from scratch this morning.

Looks like the problem is the firewall where I work. Now if I could only get all the entries back instead of in chucks. I wonder what effect word analysis would have on grouping the text together (running through the content returned looking for most used key words and then creating branches based on that). I am sure there are many more sophisticated methods, but I just wonder what's good enough to aid in the research process.

Is there any update to the GOOGLE API issue? Is there any way to still use Google as one of the web research resources?

If you are using Microsoft's Windows Desktop Search 3.0, you may have noticed that it is not working in the Research Accelerator. We have found that when Microsoft upgraded from 2.6 to 3.0 the way that we were searching stopped working. Microsoft is planning on releasing an API to 3.0 in late February 2007. Once that is out, we can update the Windows Desktop Search component of the Research Accelerator.

I added the Medical Research Site Journals@Ovid to my Microsoft Reasearch panel - and from Word it functions properly. When I add to the Research panel in Mindmanager, I get the following error: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: s The popup containing this message is a MindManager Business Types box. Any thoughts? Eric

I can't get Research Accelerator to run. I'm running MM 6 Pro on a Vista Machine. I have UAC turned off. The install says it completed successfully. But when I start MM there is no Research tab on the right side of the application.

Hi, thanks for the addin. At first I tried the old vesrion from Windows Desktop Search, which seamed to be listed in the Service list, but would not return the results. Therefore I downloaded and updated from mindjet site to the current one. Now the service is not even listed in the combo box. Moreover other services return the proxy error - yes I am within the corporate network with proxy set. We are using Windows 2000 and Windows Desktop Search 2.06.2083 Radek
