1.0.6: OneNote 2007 Send To MindManager, OneNote Hyperlinks in MindManager, and Notebook Hierarchy Mapping

Information Version 1.0.6 (2/6/2007)

Check This demonstrates a synergistic relationship between two applications, Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 and Mindjet MindManager Pro 6:

  • From MindManager, you can easily map out the Notebooks, Section Groups, Sections, Pages, and Subpages, including hyperlinks:
    Select File...Open...OneNote 2007 Notebooks.
  • From MindManager, you can send the current map to OneNote as an image that you can sketch on and annotate:
    Select File...Export...Microsoft Office OneNote 2007.
  • From OneNote, you can send a page to MindManager as a hyperlinked topic:
Press the Send to MindManager MindManager button on the Standard toolbar in OneNote.

Arrow Up The hierarchy of OneNote 2007 notebooks, sections, and pages in MindManager

Arrow Up A MindManager map in OneNote that you can sketch on.

Calendar Revision History

  • 2/6/2007 Fixed a problem where MindManager was not shutting down correctly when started from OneNote's Send to MindManager (Thanks to Nick Duffill)
  • 1/15/2007 Added Section Groups to OneNote hierarchy map (Thanks to Lutz Schmieder).
  • 1/12/2007 Added Unfiled pages, Live Shared Sections, and nested subpages to OneNote Hierarchy map. (Thanks to Bernd).
  • 1/11/2007 Fixed problem with Self-extracting zip on some systems and fixed error messages when OneNote 2007 or MindManager Pro 6 are not installed.
  • 1/11/2007 Added a left margin to the OneNote page when sent from MindManager.
  • 1/10/2007 Initial Release.

No Entry This solution requires Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 and will not work on OneNote 2003 or the OneNote 2007 Beta.  If you are running OneNote 2003, you can get the OneNote sketching on map functionality with the Tablet Extensions solution.  You can download a free trial of OneNote 2007 from Microsoft.

Bernhard, From this page http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ms406042.aspx that error means "File Does not exist". Does that give you any clue? Michael

It seems that once a page is moved out of its original section, the link will be broken and you will get an error message "Exception from HRESULT: 0x80042006" when you click the link.

It seems that I can move or rename sections inside OneNote freely, the hyperlinks to the sections and pages will be OK. But once I move a page to another section, the hyperlinks to this page will be broken. Sorry for my poor english. Regards, Dryopithecus

I have just discovered a problem with this solution where sending a page to MindManager from OneNote 2007 causes MindManager to not shut down correctly. This causes problems with other add-ins when starting MindManager again. I will be working to fix this problem. In the meantime, you can safely close the MindManager process from the task manager once MindManager has closed if you experience this problem. Sorry for any inconvenience that this has caused. Is it possible to host OneNote within the notes area of MindManager? I would find that very useful.

Is it possible to work on (modify, hide/show branches) a mind map inside OneNote? That would be fantastic if I could! Sounds like a tricky thing to add - but it can't hurt to ask :) All the best!

I am getting an "Unable to load One Note 2007 addin error" after I installed this addin. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I don't have .NET 1.1 only 2.0 & 3.0, does this add-in require that?

Krishna, Strange. It uses .Net 2.0. Are you getting that error when you startup MindManager after installing? I haven't tested it on 64-bit at all. Michael

Todd, This integration takes advantage of a MindManager Pro 6 feature: Control Strip Customization. I'm curious, what has kept you from upgrading to MindManager Pro 6? Michael

Todd said:

I haven't upgraded due to price and no compelling need. I don't mean it's too expensive and not worth it, but X5 Pro was a personal purchase, not using company funds. X5 is working fine for me and while I know there is a lot of great stuff in v. 6, I don't have the compelling need to upgrade - yet.

Looks good. One thing I noticed is that re-arranging a OneNote page to different onenote section, causes an error in Mindmanager if it had the original inserted. you get an exception 0x80042014 i guess when you insert a OneNote page into Mindmanager (using the button on One Note) that there's no dynamic relationship

No, It installed fine and didn't give me error. I also noticed that, when I open One Note, there is a MindJet Map icon initialy on the menu bar, once i click it, it gets disabled without any errors.

This is a great tool, but I get "XML is invalid" when I try to export to OneNote 2007. The message comes from OneNote. Furthermore I would like to know how I can refresh a "OneNote" mindmap within MindManager, updating the map with changes in OneNote. My though was that It would work the same way as with file explorer map parts so that you easily can refresh each main node by right clicking on it. But that does not seem to work.

I would like to use OneNote to capture my main notes then link to MM for organization of task heirarchy. I like your add-in so far but have some questions. 1) When in OneNote and sending to MM, the text in MM is read only. I would like to rephrase the title for the MM map. Please allow the user to change the title. If needed, just warn the user that the title change will not propogate to OneNote (or have it optionally do so if you can) 2) It appears I am not able to link specifically to a sentence or paragraph, just to a whole page. I will have many tasks from a single meeting note in OneNote but want to manage the tasks seperately. I would like the ability to copy a hyperlink to a specific paragraph into MM. Another way to make it happen nicely would be to just make the hyperlink in MM accept a paste from OneNote. Thanks!

Narabharath, While we are waiting for the update, there are some tips what can do a similar effect: 1) print the selected topic using the "print to OneNote" printer 2) Using the snapshot of OneNote and making a image of the selected area in MM7. Best regards

This really the combination that with change Mindmanager's success : editing notes in onenote with make it a must for all people using onenote (students in particular). I see a future where mindmanager will be part of onenote. By the way, does this addon work with Mindmanager Pro 7??thar could be a good idea!
