1.1.14: Use Microsoft Office Word 2007 to edit MindManager Maps

Check Version 1.1.14 (3/23/2007)

See this map for more information: Microsoft Office Word 2007 Map Editing

Information How this works:

When exported from MindManager, the MindManager Map is embedded as a Custom XML Stream in a Microsoft Office Word 2007 macro-enabled .docm file.  Within the .docm, there are additionally the following components:

  • Content controls for each heading topic in the word document which link to the topic text of the embedded map.
  • A MindManager tab for the ribbon user interface, this includes images for icons, an image of the map, and all of the map markers that were defined in the map.
  • Macros that allow interaction with the ribbon user interface to modify the embedded MindManager map
  • An XSL Transformation that merges the embedded MindManager map and the Word document back into a single MindManager Map.  This transform is also executed by a macro initiated from the ribbon user interface.

Exclamation Mark Word 2007 Release and Beta Versions

This solution will only work with the released version of Microsoft Office Word 2007. It will no longer work with beta vesions of Microsoft Office Word 2007.

In what kind of work context scenarios would this benefit someone?

A MindManager user wants to share the content of a map with a colleauge who doesn't have MindManager. The colleauge could edit the Word document (with the embedded map) using some of the rich graphical tools (icons, map markers, task info) from within Word and send it back to the MindManager user without losing the mapping contextual information that would be lost using standard import/export mechanisms.

A MindManager User is working with a huge map--- i mean a *HUGE* map (say a project plan that covers thousands of items over years of work). editing vast amounts of topics can be much faster in Word in some cases than it can be in MM. if nothing is lost in the translation process this can be a great way to get tons of edits done quickly.

Does it also bring forward the day when 1) MM might be bought by Microsoft and developed faster into integration with data and sharepoint 2) more people are available to write macros and shrinkwrap products for mindmanager (ie Office developers)

Aryan, If you open any MindManager .mmap file with a zip tool (or change the extension to .zip) you will see the XSD files that define the XML Schema for that MindManager file. The namespace URIs of the schemas are also the location on the web where you can download them.

When I try to import a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document, it starts, but fails with a dialog stating "Expression must evaluate to a node-set". XP Pro XP2, .Net Framework 3.0. Suggestions?

Does this converter works with Word for MAC. I'm very interested.

Kimera, This solution uses Open XML, VBA, and the Ribbon UI, none of which are on the current Word for Mac. So it would not work as it does on the Windows platform. Michael

Just about to try. In answer to the very first question "why would someone use this?" can i answer? 1 MS Word Outline View is excellent for managing any structured document eg essay, academic paper, book, chapter where you may need to change the order of things. HOWEVER MS Word Outline View is nothing like as easy to visualise as MindJet MindMaps 2 I usually create new documents in MindJet because it is much easier to identify which sections are a bit light on content and which have too much, and come up with ideas. I then convert to Word. The problem arises when I want to make changes to the structure or add new ideas, where Word is a page of dense text but MindJet brings it to life. If i have any additional suggestions I'll add them but it looks like the answer to a prayer!
